Retro Roundup

Welcome to the second edition of Retro Roundup. If you're new to the blog, you can find the first edition here.

For Retro Roundup, I'll be sharing my favorite old movies, books, videos and links!

I've always loved retro clothes, old movies, old books, as well as retro-inspired books. And sometimes I take my love of retro things so far that my sister and I go on 1950's picnics where we dress up like it's the 50's and act super dramatic:

This is actually more like 1950's picnic meets 1980's Dynasty-level drama. We look like we're two minutes away from fighting in a lily pond. But oh well, close enough.

1. A couple of weeks ago, I found a really fun video on youtube of a woman who attempted to live like a 1950's housewife for 24 hours.

2. I love this movie.

It takes place during the housing shortage of World War 2. The main character, Connie, feels it's her patriotic duty to rent half of her apartment. Against her better judgement, she rents it to an older man who then rents his half to a younger man that Connie finds just a little bit too attractive. (Shocking. Scandalous.)

This is a very slow paced movie, but it's full of wit and charm. And slow paced movies are the best kind to watch on a stressful day!

3.

One of my favorite things to read are predictions made in the 1940's and 1950's about what life would be like in the future. I've read a few random articles on the subject, and then to my delight, I found an entire book filled with them!

Some of the future predictions were:
- Dresses made out of asbestos (What a great idea. I've always wanted to experience permanent lung damage.)
- Food containing grass (and I don't mean pot.)
- Butter and milk made out of kerosene and sugary food made out of sawdust (I think I speak for all of us when I say YUM.)
- Candy made from underwear (I could barely even type that sentence without gagging.)

The whole book was funny and interesting (even if it did make me want to gag a few times) and if you love all things retro then I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy Retro Tuesday, dear readers!

  2. The dresses made of asbestos makes sense because asbestos is a fire retardant, if it weren't for the inconvenience of lung cancer, right?! ;-) I wonder what was the rationale behind those future inventions; take the underwear made candy, for example--perhaps in the future people would pee or poop sweeter?!

    1. I'm not sure what the rationale behind it was. But it's disgusting!

  3. This is a fun post! I really enjoy 40's and 50's era stuff. Especially some of the styles from those eras.
That last post though...asbestos dresses? Why? Haha I read an Archie comic I found at my grandparents house from the 70's and there was a section where they asked a question and kids could right in with their answers and they asked what the year 2000 would be like and all the responses were things like "We'll have flying cars!" and pretty much whatever was in the Jetsons's. In reality all we had was people freaking out about Y2K and blankets with arms.

    1. Blankets with arms. Haha. That's so funny.
I read a book once that said in the 50's there were predictions that in the year 2000 the outdoors would be air conditioned.

  5. I just finished Bill Bryson's memoir The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid about his idyllic childhood growing up in Iowa in the 1950's. You might like it. It is very nostalgic for that era and pretty funny too for the most part.

  6. You and your sister look smashing in that photo!
By liking retro, you show good taste. The world looked promising in those days, despite the hardships. Not any more.
As for predictions: we have some nice things made of recycled stuff (we didn't recycle in those days); we have clothes made of bamboo (plant) fiber., but no azbestos. Azbestos is getting eliminated from our lives, and rightly so.

  11. I love anything retro too. You and your sister look great in those outfits. Such a fun idea. I don't think I could last for long as a 1950s housewife. I need all my mod cons.

  18. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment. Now, it's my pleasure to return the favor. Glad I did, too! I could call myself retro, too, but I'm actually just... old. HA! There's lots of fun things to remember about the fifties, but it wasn't all sweetness and light. Even so, my most recent book takes place in the fifties, so I guess part of me is still stuck in that era, too. :)

Nice to meet you. Count me in as your newest groupie.

I was a little girl in the 50s. I remember reading 1984 and thinking it could happen--that fast! It has taken longer but Big Brother could be Google--LOL!
Truly more fantastic things have come to pass than the science fiction writers could think of. *she says while chatting on the internet* ;)
